St. Gallen Wealth Tax Calculator
St. Gallen Wealth Tax Calculator 2025
Estimate your annual wealth tax in the Canton of St. Gallen — flat 1.7‰ simple wealth tax on taxable net wealth, scaled by cantonal and municipal Steuerfüsse.
St. Gallen levies wealth tax on your taxable net wealth as at 31 December. For residents, taxable net wealth corresponds to worldwide assets minus deductible debts and the cantonal wealth tax allowances. The canton applies a linear (non-progressive) simple wealth tax of 1.7‰ on taxable net wealth; this simple tax is then multiplied by:
- the cantonal Steuerfuss (105 % of simple tax), and
- your commune’s municipal Steuerfuss (percentage of simple tax, varying by municipality).
This calculator reflects typical 2025 allowances of CHF 75,000 per taxpayer plus CHF 20,000 per minor child, and lets you adjust the municipal Steuerfuss to approximate lower- and higher-tax communes (e.g. the city of St. Gallen vs. low-tax Balgach).
Step 1 — Taxable wealth = Net wealth − Allowance (status + children)
Step 2 — Simple wealth tax = Taxable wealth × 1.7‰ (0.0017)
Step 3 — Total wealth tax ≈ Simple tax × (Cantonal Steuerfuss + Municipal Steuerfuss)
Example: Cantonal Steuerfuss = 1.05 (105 %), municipal Steuerfuss = 1.35 (135 %) in a higher-tax commune → total factor ≈ 2.40 × simple tax (excluding church tax).
Interactive Calculator
Enter your net wealth (assets minus debts), your filing status, the number of minor children, and the municipal Steuerfuss as a multiple of the simple tax (e.g. 0.80 = 80 %, 1.35 = 135 %). The script uses St. Gallen’s flat 1.7‰ wealth tax and a cantonal Steuerfuss of 105 %.
Example Scenarios
Example A — Single, Net Wealth CHF 1,000,000, No Children, Municipal Rate 1.35
Net wealth CHF 1,000,000.
Base allowance (single) ≈ CHF 75,000 → taxable wealth ≈ CHF 925,000.
Simple wealth tax @ 1.7‰ → ≈ CHF 1,573.
Cantonal rate 1.05 and municipal rate 1.35 → total factor ≈ 2.40 → total wealth tax ≈ CHF 3,770
(effective rate ≈ 0.38 % of net wealth, excluding church tax).
Example B — Married, 2 Children, Net Wealth CHF 3,000,000, Municipal Rate 1.65
Net wealth CHF 3,000,000.
Base allowance (married) ≈ CHF 150,000 + child allowance 2 × CHF 20,000 = CHF 40,000 → total allowance ≈ CHF 190,000.
Taxable wealth ≈ CHF 2,810,000; simple wealth tax @ 1.7‰ → ≈ CHF 4,777.
Cantonal rate 1.05 and municipal rate 1.65 → total factor ≈ 2.70 → total wealth tax ≈ CHF 12,900
(effective rate ≈ 0.43 % of net wealth, excluding church tax).
These examples are rounded and illustrative. Use the calculator with your own data and your municipality’s latest Steuerfuss, and compare with the official St. Gallen tax calculator for precise amounts.
