Nidwalden Wealth Tax Calculator 2025

Estimate your annual wealth tax in the Canton of Nidwalden — linear wealth tax on taxable net wealth with an adjustable municipal Steuerfuss.

Nidwalden levies a linear wealth tax on your taxable net wealth as at 31 December. Taxable net wealth is your worldwide assets (for residents) minus deductible debts and personal allowances. The canton applies a simple wealth tax of 0.25‰ on taxable wealth, and the result is multiplied by the combined Steuerfuss of canton and municipality.

This calculator uses the 2025 Nidwalden parameters as modelled in the TaxRep hub: basic allowances of approx. CHF 35,000 (single) and CHF 70,000 (married), plus around CHF 15,000 per qualifying child. The Steuerfuss typically ranges from about 4.05 to 5.16 units (excluding church tax) depending on the municipality. The tool is intended for planning and comparison only and does not replace the official Nidwalden calculator.

Formula (simplified):
Taxable wealth = Net wealth − Allowance (status + children)
Simple wealth tax = Taxable wealth × 0.25‰ (0.00025)
Total wealth tax ≈ Simple wealth tax × Steuerfuss (canton + commune, excl. church)
Certain qualifying participations (≥ 10% shareholdings) benefit from a reduced wealth tax rate in Nidwalden; this simplified model does not separately track that reduced rate.

Example Scenarios

Example A — Single, Net Wealth CHF 1,000,000, No Children, Steuerfuss 4.50

Net wealth CHF 1,000,000.
Basic allowance (single) ≈ CHF 35,000 → taxable ≈ CHF 965,000.
Simple wealth tax @ 0.25‰ → ≈ CHF 240.
Steuerfuss 4.50 → total wealth tax ≈ CHF 1,080 (effective rate ≈ 0.11 % of net wealth, excluding church tax).

Example B — Married, 2 Children, Net Wealth CHF 3,000,000, Steuerfuss 4.80

Net wealth CHF 3,000,000.
Basic allowance (married) ≈ CHF 70,000 + child allowance 2 × CHF 15,000 = CHF 30,000 → total allowance ≈ CHF 100,000.
Taxable wealth ≈ CHF 2,900,000.
Simple wealth tax @ 0.25‰ → ≈ CHF 725.
Steuerfuss 4.80 → total wealth tax ≈ CHF 3,480 (effective rate ≈ 0.12 % of net wealth, excluding church tax).

These scenarios are rounded and illustrative. Use the calculator with your own wealth, family situation and commune’s Steuerfuss, and compare with the official Nidwalden tax calculator for precise figures.

Planning Use

  • Test different Steuerfüsse to compare low- and higher-tax communes within Nidwalden — the linear rate means differences in the Steuerfuss directly scale your wealth tax.
  • Combine this calculator with Allowances & Deductions and Valuation Rules to refine your taxable net wealth (mortgages, other debts, exempt pension assets, business valuations).
  • Incorporate the result into broader Planning Strategies — residence choice, leverage and debt structuring, timing of gifts and inheritances, and coordination with cross-border tax obligations.
  • For complex holdings (significant participations, real estate portfolios, international assets), consider a tailored review via the Nidwalden Income Tax Service .
