Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

What is an ITIN? Do I need an ITN?

Please take a look at our tax guide here.

The application process

(1) The assignment and data transfer

In order to assign us with the application of an ITIN, you must first have a customer account. If you do not have a customer account yet, you can create one here.

In your customer account you can upload a message or you can use our contact form to engage us. We will then provide you with a document requesting the information and documents required for the application in your customer account. If original documents are required, they must be sent to us by mail. Otherwise, all information or documents will be uploaded via your customer account.

(2) The application

When applying for an ITIN, a distinction can be made between applying for a new ITIN and renewing an expired ITIN.

(a) Application for a new ITIN

Applying for an ITIN for the first time. If you’ve never had an ITIN before and we are submitting the application for a new ITIN, the following has to be included in your Application Package:

1. The completed Form W-7. If you apply for more than one ITIN for the same tax return (such as for a spouse or dependent(s)), we prepare one Form for each ITIN you apply for.

2. Your original tax return(s) for which the ITIN is needed. However, there are exceptions to the requirement to include a U.S. federal tax return. If you claim one of these exceptions, you must submit the documentation required instead of a tax return. See Exceptions Tables, later.

3. Original documents, or certified copies of these documents from the issuing agency, required to support the information provided on Form W-7.

(b) ITIN renewal application

1. The completed Form W-7. If you apply for more than one ITIN for the same tax return (such as for a spouse or dependent(s)), we prepare one Form for each ITIN you apply for.

2. Your original tax return(s) for which the ITIN is listed. There are no exceptions to this requirement.

3. Original documents, or certified copies of these documents from the issuing agency, required to support the information provided on Form W-7.

(3) The filing

We will send Form W-7, your tax return (if applicable) or other documents required by an exception, and the Supporting Documentation to the IRS ITIN Operation by mail. Electronic filing of the ITIN application is not provided for by the IRS.

(4) The IRS process

After your Forms W-7 have been processed, the IRS will assign an ITIN to the return and process the return. Currently this process usually takes more than 14 weeks.
